Alexander Mashkevitch is an Israeli-Kazakh billionaire who owns major investments and holdings in Kazakhstan. He is a major shareholder and chairman of the board of Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation which is a Kazakh metal mining company.
Mashkevitch was born in a Lithuanian Jewish family in Soviet Kyrgyzstan. Like other Russian oligarchs who became billionaires after the fall of the Soviet Union (a big portion of which were Jewish), Mashkevitch obtained his wealth through the privatization of the national resources in Russia and the other nations gaining independence after the fall of USSR. He obtained mineral and gas operations in Kazakhstan.1

Donor to Zionist organizations

Mashkevitch supports Israel through his donations and his influence in Kazakhstan. He is a major donor to the former pro-Israel lobby group European Friends of Israel.2 European Friends of Israel was a Brussels-based lobby group founded in 2006. It was established to forge a stronger political relationship between the European Union and Israel. It is comprised of more than 300 members of the European Parliament and members of different national parliaments.
Mashkevich also served as the President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) until 2011. The EAJC is one of the five regional branches of World Jewish Congress (WJC), one of the oldest international Zionist lobbies. Its current president is Mikhail Mirilashvili, another pro-Israel tycoon operating in Russia and Georgia. EAJC claims to represents Jewish communities in the Eurasia, yet indisputably acts as an arm for Israeli foreign interests.3

Israeli Asset in Kazakhstan

Mashkevich also has close connections with Kazakh politicians. He is said to be a friend of former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. In 2002, Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer asked Mashkevitch to help him regarding the release of a number of Israeli prisoners held by Hezbollah. Mashkevitch reportedly used his influence in Kazakhstan and convinced then-Kazakh President Nazarbayev to make contact with Iran over the issue.4

Contribution to Israeli interests in Turkey

Mashkevitch also reportedly played a role improving relations with Turkey. He funds Rabbi Menachem Mendy Chitrik, head of the “Alliance of Rabbis in Islamic States” who played an important role in reestablishing good relations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Israel.5
