Overview:
Hillel Neuer is a Canadian lawyer who is the executive director of the so-called UN Watch, a human rights NGO and UN watchdog group based in Geneva, Switzerland. He also writes for the International Herald Tribune, Juriste International, Commentary, The New Republic, Christian Science Monitor and the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.
Hillel Neuer was born in a Jewish family in Montreal, Quebec. He later studied law in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Israel as the Pinnacle of Human Rights
Neuer has been named as one of the “top 100 most influential Jewish people in the world” by Israeli newspaper Maariv. He is an ardent Zionist and began his career as a Zionist agitator, working at a pro-Israel think tank named as the “Canadian Institute for Jewish Research”. Neuer’s incessant line over these years has been to portray Israel as the pinnacle of human rights and its enemies as its most dangerous violators. He frequently accuses the UN of antisemitism or demonization of Israel1. He portrays slightest UN pressure against Israel’s atrocities as some kind of “inquisition”.2 Neuer has also personally attacked various public figures for pro-Palestinian activism, notably attacking Canadian Jewish thinker Naomi Klein after she asked for boycotting the 2009 Toronto Film Festival featuring Israeli movies. Neuer and his UN Watch published a report titled “Naomi Klein Exposed: The Unauthorized Biography” in an attempt to suppress her views.3
UN Watch
UN Watch is an American pro-Israel lobby group founded by the former head of the American Jewish Committee, Morris Abram. UN Watch’s stated mission is “to monitor the performance of the United Nations by the yardstick of its own Charter”. UN Watch, like its current executive director Hillel Nueur, frequently accuses the UN of anti-Semitism when it comes to criticizing Israel or condemning Israeli atrocities against Palestinians.
